Protecting nickel with a monoatomic iodine adlayer leads to the capability of handling nickel samples without oxidation in an ambient environment for a reasonable period of time. Ex situ Auger electron spectroscopy and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy analysis of an I-passivated Ni(111) surface under potential control are reported.
