# Efficient evaluation of $1/x$ for texture mapping

Accounting for the effect of perspective when performing a texture
mapped area fill operation requires at least one division for each
pixel in the filled area. This division can be costly in terms of the
number of processor cycles required as well as in the number of gates
required to provide a hardware divider. This paper considers the
number of operations and the relationship between table size and
accuracy obtainable using a novel combination of several table look up
methods to approximate 1/x.
