Rule-based XML Mediation for Data Validation and Privacy Anonymization

This paper proposes a simple and uniform approach to realize XML mediation, such as data validation and privacy anonymization, based on a set of rules that consist of two separately defined components: constraint conditions in a conceptual data notation in the XML message and actions performed only when the conditions are satisfied. When the rules are defined, we require only the conceptual data notation in the XML message, not the real data of the message. When the rules are automatically transformed to the implementation-specific data representation required for XML mediation, we need two more information: the data mappings from the data notation in rules to the concrete data in the XML message and the implied data relationships that are hidden in rules. Our approach will allow us to separate the logic for data validation and for privacy anonymization from the application logic and make it easy to update and maintain the logic in accord with the changes to the schema of the XML messages exchanged among applications in SOA.
