High contrast tri-layer guest-host liquid crystal display with a quarter-wave plate reflector

We have developed a novel technology for a three-layer color reflective display with high contrast ratio and high reflectivity. In this scheme each guest-host liquid crystal layer is homogeneously aligned and a wide band quarter-wave plate is placed between the bottom reflector and the liquid crystal cell. With this new scheme we obtained a reflectivity of 65% and a 15:1 contrast ratio.
