Analytic Performance Models of the Flash Channel in Solid-State Drives

Among the design choices that need to be made in engineering a solid-state drive (SSD), the scheduling of the different types of requests competing for the SSD resources is a critical one, because it affects not only the performance but also the proper functioning of the garbage-collection mechanism. In this report, we focus on the analytic modeling of a single flash channel under different scheduling policies. Closed-form results for throughput and mean delay enable useful insights into the behavior of the SSD and the impact of the various system parameters on performance.
