The Optimum Pipeline Depth for a Microprocessor

The dependence of the performance of a microprocessor on pipeline depth is studied both theoretically and by simulation. An analytical theory is developed and verified by simulation. The theory predicts the optimum pipeline depth for a particular technology and microarchitectnre, executing a particular workload. The tradeoff between the throughput of a particular pipeline and the penalties associated with hazards leads to this optimum pipeline depth.
