Disk Storage Power Management

Data center power management has become increasingly important in recent years. In particular, the need to understand and manage storage power consumption has arisen. We developed a framework for estimating the power consumed by the storage components of a data center under varying workloads. Such a framework is useful for capacity planning tools, for enabling estimation of future performance and power consumption, and for online storage systems providing power estimation per disk, per array, and per volume. In addition, we present a technique for controlling the power consumed by disk drives that support acoustic modes. This technique reduces instantaneous power consumption but sacrifices performance.
