E-Cash Withdrawal using Mobile Telephony

This paper proposes a protocol for adding value to an electric purse, suitable for implementation over a wireless network. The protocol is developed with respect to the Deutsche Geldkarte electronic purse and its withdrawal (or value loading) function. We propose extensions to the architecture to allow secure and convenient e-cash withdrawal in a wireless application environment such as GSM/SMS or the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) where open wireless networks are used for communication purposes. We expect that other electronic purse schemes can be adapted to this protocol, assuming the Deutsche Geldkarte scheme to be sufficiently generic.
