Enabling Text Processing Applications with Automatic Glossary Extraction

Glossary items in specialized technical genres exhibit many of the problems associated with multiword expressions. This paper describes recent work on automatic glossary identification and extraction, and examines a number of issues arising when a glossary extraction technology is used as an enabling capability for a broad range of text processing applications. We outline an algorithm for glossary item identification, and discuss how a particular encapsulation of it addresses architectural, representational, and interface issues emerging during harnessing the technology for a number of applied tasks.
