A Self-Compensated Twisted Nematic Mode for Reflective Light Valves

A self-compensated twisted nematic mode for reflective light valves is presented. The advantages of this new mode are nearly 100% achievable optical efficiency, an operating voltage below 3 V, and a relatively large tolerance in cell-gap non-uniformity. For other published nematic LC modes to be operated at such low voltage, either optical compensation films are needed or the optical efficiency is lower or the tolerance in cell-gap non-uniformity is stringent.
