Organic Light-Emitting Diodes for Microsystems

Technology based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has become very popular. First commercial products containing fixed-pattern OLEDs or small-size OLED displays with a passive matrix-driving scheme are already on the market. Several companies work on prototypes of large-area full-color OLED displays, which have to be active matrix devices. In a second step, OLED technology will be applied to areas such as silicon-based microsystems, and create new opportunities. This great interest is due to the differences between OLEDs and traditional illumination and display techniques, for example, the small dimensions of the OLEDs, their high dynamic range, and the possibilities created by their arbitrary shapes.
