Single Crystals With Clean, Atomically Flat, Low-Index Facets

A method to prepare small single crystals with clean, atomically flat, low-index facets from thin rods or wires of conductive matter under ultrahigh vacuum conditions will be reported. A detailed description of the apparatus and its handling is given. In situ atomic resolution of iodine-passivated Au(111) and Ni(111) facets, using scanning probe microscopes, is presented.
