We describe an ultrasonic method for measuring liquid levels that are subject to vibration and shaking. A 1-2 MHz transducer mounted exterior to the vessel is used in the echo mode. A simple time averaging rather than amplitude averaging algorithm is employed based on the random motion of the liquid. In addition, a means for preventing debris from collecting in the region of the transducer is provided by a low frequency ultrasonic annular plate that surrounds the MHz transducer. Experimental data level errors as small as 0.4% for agitated liquids compared to quiescent ones using the proposed temporal averaging algorithm.
