Propagation Matrices for Biaxial Homogeneous Media

4x4 and 2x2 propagation matrices for uniaxial media are extended to biaxial media by making simple modifications to solutions of surface normal wave vector. For uniaxial media, the well known analystical expressions can be directly deduced from the modified solutions. The application of these matrices are illustrated by carrying out the optical transmission of an optically compensated bend mode liquid crystal display with a biaxial compensation element.
