Knowledge of the social environment in an organization is critical to many aspects of successful integration into the workplace. This paper focuses on supporting observation of the social environment in a physically co-present community of interns through a Web site containing relevant static and dynamic social information. This brief case study presents an account of the type of information that was useful and how it was used. Our analysis revealed that a simple Web site consisting of persistent conversation and support for the visibility of participants enabled users to both extract and provide social information that promoted integration into the workplace.
