A Test-Ready Meta-Model for Use Cases

In the UML, use cases are used to define coherent units of functionality associated with classes,
subsystems, or systems. Two principal purposes that use cases serve are specifying the functionality the system will provide and providing a basis for developing test cases for the system being specified. This paper discusses issues that arise when using use cases as the basis for model-based testing. A basic use case meta-model is developed that is consistent with the UML 1.3 specification but based on meta-modeling techniques developed to provide precise semantics for modeling languages. This meta-model is then extended to derive a test enabled meta-model for use cases. The paper closes by discussing future research.
