Polymeric Thin Films for Information Technology

This review presents a brief description of the current industrial research on polymeric thin films which are critical to the continuing advances of information technology. The following four topics have been selected: photoresists for microlithography; interlevel dielectric films for microprocessors; polymer stabilized liquid crystal systems for flat panel displays; and head/disk interface lubricants for magnetic recording. The materials problems that researchers are facing are very challenging, and the outcome of these research efforts is likely to determine how far the information technology will move forward in the 21st century.
